The Alaska Psychological Association (AK-PA) has joined with the American Psychological Association in sponsoring the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award (PHWA) to recognize different sizes and types of organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to programs, policies, and practices that foster employee health and well-being.

Successful organizations that develop an effective workforce have a competitive advantage in the marketplace.  There is a link between employee health and well-being with improved organizational performance.

The PHWA program focuses on the following proven workplace practices that help employees:

  • Employee Involvement
  • Health and Safety
  • Employee Growth and Development
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Employee Recognition
  • Communication

Apply online for the PHWA program at www.phwa.org.  The website administers all necessary forms online as needed, compiling results, and maintaining confidentiality.  Organizational management should Register their organization and complete the initial Application Form by 7-31-07 for the 2007 Award year.  The organization will have through 9-07 to complete other standardized measures found useful by research in organizational psychology.  The organization will be contacted by the AK-PA PHWA Coordinator.  The organization may be asked to complete an Organizational Practices Questionnaire, elaborating upon its workplace practices.  A Site Visit may take place.  The evaluation would include a representative sample of employees to complete an Employee Questionnaire.

Psychologists may recommend an organization for consideration, providing identifying information, an organizational member to contact, and written reasons for consideration that may address the above workplace practices.  Contact the AK-PA PHWA Coordinator at phwa@ak-pa.org for further information.

Organizations that are selected for recognition at the state level by the Alaska Psychological Association in 10-07 in Anchorage, AK, may be nominated for national recognition in 3-08 or 3-09 in Washington, DC, by the American Psychological Association.
