President Regarding Membership

Dear AK-PA Members,
As the leaves fall and we
settle in for the seasons ahead, AK-PA is gearing up for the New
Year as well. First, our annual meeting is next month –
November 12th (more specifics to follow). We
will host a CE event and an awards presentation and luncheon.
We sincerely hope you will attend this annual event, as a way to
support AK-PA, to network with fellow professionals and to learn
more about ways AK-PA can partner with you in your career goals.
As a Board, we met a few weeks ago and came up with what we
believe are exciting initiatives for the coming year. We based
these on experience, on information gleaned from the survey sent
out and from the realities of our current fiscal climate.
1. AK-PA intends to be the statewide “go-to”
organization for mental health resources and as such we are
focusing energy on ways to engage clinicians across the
state’s vast geography.
a. We have our first ever web-cast CE
coming Wed October 21st from noon to 1pm.
b. We are now using Skype to facilitate
rural Board members inclusion in Board meetings.
c. We will post an annual calendar
shortly so everyone can have more advanced notice of
events.
2. We hear that members want AK-PA to provide
advocacy regarding mental health issues both on a local and
federal level. We at the AK-PA board have been doing this
diligently for years, but have perhaps not focused enough on
how to share these efforts and achievements with our
members.
a. We will be launching a regular
“e-newsletter” which will highlight issues and
achievements in advocacy.
b. The AK-PA Public Education committee
is working on goals to increase public discussion and
engagement around mental health issues through media and
other forums.
3. We hear members
expect membership to enhance their networking.
a. We will be highlighting our speakers
and referral directories.
b. We will be creating better avenues for
networking at CE events
c. We will use the newsletter as a way to
highlight members’ work so we can all know the many
resources we have here locally.
d. We will be encouraging all of you to
become involved in an AK-PA committee so that you meet
and join fellow clinicians in vital work on behalf of
our profession.
I am excited and honored to
have served on the AK-PA board for over 6 years now and see our
organization growing stronger and richer in what it can offer
our members. The board is now comprised of a wide range of
clinicians, from graduate students and newly minted Ph.D.’s, to
individuals who were among the founders of AK-PA and have a
wealth of history and wisdom. We have rural board members and
Anchorage based members, we have folks in private practice and
individuals working in non-profit and university settings. We
definitely represent a wide range of views, but we have a common
bond – we all believe strongly that it is our duty as mental
health professionals to belong to our professional organization
as a way to promote our profession - to promote mental health
services as a key to health and wellness for all people in
Alaska.
Sincerely,
Karen Ferguson, Ph.D.
AK-PA President
