DIVERSITY SUBCOMMITTEE OF
THE ALASKA PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
Next Subcommittee Meeting will be Sept 12th at 7:00 PM
Given the diversity within Alaska, the Diversity Subcommittee of AK-PA wants to increase the visibility and importance of diversity in the organization.
By diversity, we mean differences among people to include race, ethnicity, culture, Indigenous heritage, national origin, gender, gender identity, age and generation, religion and spiritual orientation, sexual orientation, developmental and acquired disability, language, and socioeconomic status.
Our goals are to increase representation of behavioral health professionals from diverse groups in our organization and activities. We also strive to organize some of our educational efforts around what behavioral health professionals need to know about working with diverse groups.
Click the following link to read a summary of the results of the diversity survey sent out in 2007 (http://www.ak-pa.org/diversity/diversitysummary.pdf). This survey is being used as a baseline to measure AK-PA's progress in addressing diversity issues. It is also being used to determine the educational needs and preferences of behavioral health professionals with respect to diversity. Click the following link if you are interested in viewing the survey and the questions asked (http://www.ak-pa.org/diversity/diversityassessment.pdf).
This year the Board has been working on ways to
make AK-PA more diverse and accessible, and towards this goal, we are once
again making funds available to encourage rural participants’ involvement in
the upcoming Continuing Education (CE) events. We are able to offer 2 awards
consisting of $200 each plus free registration at the next AK-PA CE
workshop. To be eligible for the award, you must live at least 120 miles
from Anchorage,
be a member or student member of AK-PA, and attend the entire workshop. If you would like to apply, please send an
e-mail to Pam at pamelah@pobox.alaska.net
